How to set up Apple TV

Apple TV is a device that has taken entertainment streaming to the next level. It has undergone many changes since it was first launched in 2006. The latest version is the Apple TV 4K 3th generation and allows 4K streaming on your device.

Apple has made sure to make this television with the latest technology. You can watch movies, play video games, use Siri, use a third-party app like Netflix, and sync it with your other Apple devices. The beginning set-up of the TV is straightforward and can be done swiftly, while some settings will take a few moments to configure and personalize. Nevertheless, you can start setting it up, and here’s how you can get your Apple TV working.

Things required before the set-up

  1. HD or 4K television set
  2. HDMI cord
  3. Wi-Fi or broadband
  4. Apple ID

Once you have checked off the list above, you can start the procedure for setting up your TV.

Setting up Apple TV

To start, affirm that you have a wireless network and its password, or connect the Ethernet cable to your TV for the wired connection. Now, connect the HDMI cable to the port on your TV and the other end of it to the Apple TV. After this, connect your Apple TV to a power source. Switch on your television and select the HDMI port that inputs your Apple TV; this step happens on some devices.

  • Now, press the ‘Menu’ button on your Apple TV remote to wake up the device. If this doesn’t work, connect your remote first by pressing the ‘Menu’ (or the back) and ‘+’ keys together. The screen will show step-by-step instructions to guide you through setting up the data connection and signing in to your account.
  • Next, choose your language and country using the Siri Remote.
  • For the next step, choose Set Up Manually and enter your Apple ID, which can be annoying, given that the on-screen keyboard isn’t very user-friendly. So, to input this, you can use Siri or VoiceOver. If you want to set up your Apple TV automatically, select Set Up with iPhone instead.
  • To use Siri, click on the space where you want to enter data and hold down the mic button on the remote. To use VoiceOver, press the ‘Menu’ button thrice on the remote.

Automatic set-up via an iOS device

You can also directly connect and transfer your data and sign-up information to your Apple TV by using an iOS device. Ensure your iOS device is updated and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on. Touch the device on the TV and follow the on-screen guide on both the TV and your iOS device.

Customizing the settings

You can configure the settings on your Apple TV according to your choice. First, you can opt to switch on the location services, which is unnecessary as your device is static, but it is an option if you want to see wallpapers change according to the time of the day.

Next, choose to enable Siri, as it will give you the advantage of using the inbuilt mic on the remote and help you command your Apple TV. During the set-up, you will be asked if you want aerial screensavers; you shouldn’t choose this option if you have limited data. To help the company collect data and survey or analyze problems with the technology, you can choose to enable the option for sending diagnostic data.

Getting familiar with the TV

After you finish the procedure mentioned above, you will reach the home screen, where you can add apps by downloading them from the app store. You can also change the screensavers in the settings or photos. The television goes to sleep mode after an hour of inactivity, but you can also put it to sleep by holding the home button for a few seconds and then selecting sleep.
