iPhone 7 Tips and Tricks

Adjust the Feedback of the Home Button

The Home button brings a significant change in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Till now, all iPhones featured a physical button, but this one has a capacitive button which is touch sensitive. This is not a mechanical button that moves. Instead, it uses “Taptic Engine” to send a physical feedback. It may take some getting used to, and to help you, Apple has placed the option to adjust the feedback to a level that you are comfortable with.

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap on General
  • Look for Home button and tap on it
  • Choose the feedback level that you are comfortable with

Get A Bokeh Effect With Portrait Mode

The portrait mode offers a depth of field that helps you achieve effects which are very similar to DSLR like pictures. This feature allows you to focus the viewer’s attention to the main subject while the rest of the background beautifully blurs out. While high-end cameras can do some real magic when it comes to the perfect blur, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are great at it too and they are easier to carry around as well.

The option can be selected from the carousel of different camera options at the bottom of the screen. Swipe on the screen to pick the Portrait mode and beginning clicking for some amazing images with a bokeh blur.

Return to the old way of unlocking your phone

The new Home button changes the way you unlock your phone. Earlier, all you had to do was rest your phone on the button and let the Touch ID recognize it and unlock your device. Now you need to press the Home button so that you can unlock it. While the change is a small one, long time iPhone users are having a difficult time getting used to it. If you want the Home button to go back to its old way of unlocking then follow these steps:

  • Tap on the Settings menu
  • Tap on General
  • Look up Accessibility and tap on it
  • Find Home button and tap on it
  • You will see an option that says “Rest Finger to Unlock”. Toggle it on and you will be back to unlocking your device the old way.

Edit Live Photos

While the iPhone 6s introduced live photos to Apple users, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus gives you the opportunity to edit these photos just like your usual still photos. You can add new filters, change the angles and even crop the images to add some perfection to the live photos. Simply head to the live photo you want to edit and tap on Edit.

Using the Magnifier

If you want to magnify an object then you can turn your phone into a magnifying glass by using a new feature known as the Magnifier. Once you switch it on, you just need to triple tap the Home button to pull up the camera that works as the magnifying lens. You will be able to zoom in and out using a bar at the bottom of the screen. But first, you must activate this option.

  • In the Settings menu, look for General and tap on it
  • Go to Accessibility
  • Tap on magnifier and switch it on

Use Color Filters for Ease of View

Those who suffer from any form of color blindness will find this new option to be a good addition to the iPhone. They can choose from different color filters and screen tints to help them adjust the screen according to their requirements. You will find this under:

  • Settings
  • Head to general
  • Tap on Accessibility
  • Look for Display Accommodations and tap on it
  • Choose Color Filters and pick the filter suitable for your eyes.

Raise to Wake Feature

The Raise to Wake feature is switched on by default on your iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. It will light up the screen as soon as you pick up your phone. But if you don’t want your phone turning on every time you pick it up then simply switch off this feature.

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap on Display and Brightness
  • Scroll down to see an option which says Raise to Wake. Toggle off the slider to stop your phone from bringing up the lock screen every time you pick it up.

Accessing the Camera app from the lock screen

Till the iPhone 6, you saw a camera icon on your lock screen which allowed you to snap pictures quickly without unlocking your phone. This changes in the iPhone 7 because there is no camera app in the lock screen at all. So how do you access the camera app for a quick shot?

Simply swipe on the screen from left to right to bring up the camera on your phone without unlocking the device.

iPhone 7 and Water Damage

Your iPhone 7 comes with an IP67 certification which means that it can survive a dip in 1 meter deep water for 30 minutes. While the iPhone 7 does live up to its certification, Apple has included a moisture detection feature which will help you identify if your phone is in trouble after getting dunked in water.

If you see the warning message that moisture is detected in your device then switch it off immediately, unplug it from the charger and allow it to dry completely before you do anything with it.
